Client Profile: Janet Namuteni

2021 Client at the Bethel Center in Kampala

Janet Namuteni resides in the Bwaise neighborhood of Kampala with her six children. When Janet and her husband learned of their HIV status, they were stigmatized and isolated from their community.

In 2019, Janet’s husband passed away due to HIV-related complications. “When my husband died, I felt caged and alone. My health declined, and I lost a lot of weight. The little money I was earning was all consumed by the many hospital bills,” Janet said.

In December 2021, Janet joined the Untold program in Bethel Center, run in partnership with St. Nicholas Church of Uganda, Kalerwe. “I was so surprised to find so many people who are like me, and they were confident to share their stories with us. I immediately felt at home, loved, and cared for,” Janet exclaimed.

During the Christmas break, Janet fell ill. She was home alone with no one to care for her. She went a few days without food, and as a result, she was also not taking her medication. Through the telecounseling program, the center's counselors called Janet to check in on her, and she opened up about her challenges.

Center counselors took her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with malaria. Through the Medical Endowment Fund, the Untold program paid for the cost of her hospital stay and medication.

“I am overwhelmed with love from the Untold counselors. When I was sick no one including my family cared for me, but the counselors came to my rescue. Untold has been a family like no other,” Janet added.

Through the one-on-one counseling sessions, Janet has accepted her status and has gone a step further to forgive her relatives. She disclosed her HIV status to her children, and today, they are a happy family.
